Still Life (for Connor)

Instead of seeing spring's first bloom,
you died inside your mother's womb.
Instead of shedding tears of joy
for their firstborn, baby boy,
your parents cried out in despair
for the dreams no longer there.
All their hopes went unfulfilled
when your heart forever stilled.

Yet, in their hearts you still live on,
and in God's hands you rest, their son.
Why He snuffed out your tiny flame
is something not to be explained.
None to punish, or to blame.

You spent so little time on earth,
no time for crying after birth.
Your parents wept and grieved that day
when you went so far away.
They wish your siblings, not yet born,
had known their brother, stilled one morn.

Still, when they say their last good-byes
and journey to that distant shore,
they'll smile and gaze into your eyes
when you meet them at Heaven's door.
