You've seen those popular lounge threads like "what tunes are you listening to", "post a random picture", or "post the contents of your clipboard". This one here, though is not for the faint-hearted. It will separate out the boys from the men and the wheat from the chaff.

People are scared to post their IP addresses because they think terrible things could happen. I think it is a fear of the unknown that causes people to think that posting their IP address could cause problems. In this culture of fear people find comfort in things that they believe to be secure, putting their hopes into a false sense of security. A fool who believes that posting his own IP address is very dangerous, tends to be the same gullible fool who believes a program like ES5 (http://3-3-3.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89) is secure.

ISPs keep logs, so law enforcement can find out your identity with subpoenas of your IP address. So can the RIAA, with no judicial oversight. If you send a death threat to the President, then probably they would subpoena your ISP to discover your identity, based on the IP address stamped on the e-mail. But for regular internet usage, the posting of your IP address shouldn't be a problem.

If a person knows your IP address, then your internet service provider can be determined, and so can your approximate geographical location. IP addresses are controlled by four basic organizations. You should be able to take any WAN IP address and by doing a whois query at one of these sites, get more information.

This still is far from pinpointing you as a person. A much larger invasion of your privacy would be for you to post your Social Security number, which is often used as a password to verify various financial transactions which may occur by telephone.

I'm more comfortable posting my IP address online than my Social Security number, name, birthday, address, telephone number, or e-mail.

WAN is an abbreviation for wide area network. LAN is an abbreviation for local area network. Everybody who posts on this forum has a WAN address. Some people, like those who have direct dialup, have no LAN address, because it is the same as the WAN address. To check your LAN address in Windows XP, go to Programs-->Accessories-->Command Prompt and type "ipconfig/all". In Windows 98 just go to run and type "winipcfg". Does anyone know a way to do it in Windows XP from the run menu in one step, like 98 and Millennium?

With ADSL I have the same IP address for a couple of weeks at a time. The power just stalled for a second, causing the light to flicker and the router or ADSL modem to reboot, giving me a new IP address. Yet it was brief enough that the computers I had running didn't reboot. In WinMX, I was connected to a primary user for about fifty hours, and that was reset. What amazes me is that I had an ongoing upload in Soulseek and it kept going even after my IP address changed. But the WinMX uploads got disconnected.

A couple of those were cybercafes. The ones that resolve to Covad Communications are my home ones. It's actually Earthlink ADSL. Except for the first and fourth post, all of them have been from home.

Every time I post on this forum, my IP address gets logged by the forum, so that an administrator is able to look up all the IP addresses a person has ever posted with on this board. phpBB doesn't log IP addresses with each post, so it's a lot more easy to troll a board running on that. Here are all the ones that come up with a search for "eclectica", since the opening of this board on 2003-04-28. Anyone spot their girlfriend's IP address there?
