anyway, i saw mona lisa smile today, i thought the movie would be all about inspiration to live outside of the institutional standards set during hte 50's for women... you know, become lawyers and colledge graduates, go to yale etc, but instead i learnt that it was actually about the freedom of choice... wether one chooses to be a housewife and raise a family, or one chooses to go to law school, or if one chooses to do both. It was empowering because of the choices. It showed me that i was incorrect in thinking that because a woman chooses to be a housewife and raise a family as her soul occupation, it doesn't make her any less BRAVE for her choices than a woman who chose to study law in university. One girl rejected a yale acceptance to get married and become a housewife, and she was happy... another girl WAS a housewife and was tragically unhappy because she was just doing what was standard, not because that was what was in her heart... that ended in divorce and she expressed her dreams to finish colledge and then go to yale. It shows that while institutional standards exist, it is not less of a choice to live within them if thati s what your heart desires... you are only living the standard expected life if you are going against your hearts wishes to be there... but if you are doing it because that is what u truely desire, then it is a choice... and ultimately your freedom.
So whatever the choice, in or outside the square, if its a choice based on your heart, then it is inspiring and liberating.
