During the lead-up of getting cable, u will have noticed i displayed some excitment by hinting that i am well... excited about getting cable and excited about all the porn i can download... well, let it be known, that i have yet to d/l a single pornography file, and my excitment has long ago died!

I really hate cable... it is not what i expected. You know, i did a virus scan on my computer... TWENTY-FIVE virusus found... when i had a modem, i never had a single virus and i d/led porn and opened up suspiscious .exe files and everything. So my computer is at the computer man being cleaned, and now i am on this other computer in another room, and it too was litered with virusus... or is it viri? Anyway, so we recovered this computer, because we are computer stupid and dont know what else to do and i lost all my files and now we have some zonealarm pro, and now none of my pages will open or load, and i can't even check my email because the page wont load and ebay wont load, i mean... if ebay won't load, how else am i supposed to browse and never buy vintage glo-mesh selling for a dollar? damnit, i hate cable. Modem was slow, but at least it was easy.

If you lost all your files then you might as well format your hard drive. Do you have the ability to do that and do you have an installation disc of Windows? Also you need to keep your antivirus software updated, and scan all new executable files that come onto your computer. I have all the discs and they can be sent to you by mail. The thing that changed when you got cable was that your internet connection was always on. That gave you a higher chance of getting worms from Windows vulnerabilities. If you go to the Windows update page which you can activiate from your Start menu, it's good to get all the critical updates there. I also recommend a program called Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/) that will scan for some trojans and spyware on your computer.

If your cable modem has an RJ45 ethernet output you can get a router and that would provide a hardware firewall for you. If you get a router then you can share your internet connection with many computers at home and network them all together that way. I don't use a software firewall. One difference between a hardware firewall and a software firewall is that by default the software firewall blocks traffic in both directions, while the router only blocks traffic in which your computer acts as a server rather than as a client. The software firewall takes some getting used to. I used Sygate (http://www.sygate.com/firewall/) at one point and liked it.

You could try to Disconnect manually when you dont use the Net.
Or just unplug the cable behind the PC.

Antivirus software is as good as its updated virus-definitions.
I've been using Panda few days now, it will update virus-defs. automatically,
everyday. I also use Sygate Pro firewall, somehow that seems to be more
better for me, easier to use etc. I had Zone Alarm Pro for sometime but didnt like it
that much so i got teh Sygate.

Suprnova (http://www.suprnova.org) has the stuff, i mean latest stuff.
Thats where i get the apps usually, using Torrentstorm (http://www.torrentstorm.com/pages/download.html)

I noticed also that when i got the cable, a lot of bad stuff started to appear
on my PC. Nowadays the net is starting to be more and more hostile place.
It only takes to open a site and some maliscious scripts and such will be run.

I also use Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download) together with Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) to block a lot of stuff.

Thóse a pretty much basic stuff what i think folks should have if going about
in teh IntraNjet.

well i didn't end up having to sell my computer... it is back, supposedly nice and clean and virus free... reformatted and everything. I'd like to thank u both for ur suggestions and advice, i really really appreciate it, and i will deff try out these things when hooking up my puter tonight.


I also vow to take better care of my box, as in all the 3 or so years that i had this computer... i never once formatted the HD and i only backed up files about 3 times.

A whole year has passed and where are we now? me, I'm working having been employed since April 19 of this year and am still using PeoplePc as my ISP at their prorated rate of $8.95 after calling them to cancel because of the high price of their service.
