For numerous reasons I have decided to disable the viewing of Who's Online (http://www.3-3-3.org/forum/online.php) except for the staff.
1. This is not chat, this is a forum, so it doesn't matter whether anyone is online when you make your post. I don't want people to chat through the forum.
2. I want to reduce the amount of stalking. That is why I've set by default for newly registered members to have PMs turned off and to be "hidden".
3. It keeps the site more secure because trouble makers never know when a staff member is online or not. I'm glad that everyone on the staff has voluntarily chosen to be hidden. Here's a good example of how it worked out well. tim, who is restricted from sending PMs, had a clone account with zero posts named TheWatcher that he used to send PMs to people. So in the middle of the night when all was quiet he quickly logged in and sent a PM to me, then logged out. But he got busted because I saw him logged into the account with his regular IP address. The point is that he didn't realize I was online and thought he could get away with it, but he was wrong. Whether we on the staff are all offline sleeping soundly or busy watching your every move is something that you will never know, so it makes the job of trouble makers that much harder.
