Do you celebrate Valentine's day? I've always been aware of it but have never celebrated it much. The holiday seems a bit hypocritical because so many people act like they are in love one day of the year, and then that gives them a clean slate to go back to the poisonous behavior in their relationships. It reminds me of how people go to church every Sunday to feel that they are forgiven for being the monsters that they are during the rest of the week. Well that's the cynical outlook but really I think if people are romantic they will celebrate their love whenever they feel like it and not when retailers decided they need some business and sales. Love is a private affair, so making it a holiday is oxymoronic. Only if there were orgies involved would it make sense to make it a public holiday.
With some holidays there are just as many people happy as there are sad people. Holidays are a time of joy for some but depression for others. But with Valentine's day I imagine that more people are unhappy than happy. The reason why is that people already in love can take each other for granted, but for people who are lonely, then the holiday is a bitter reminder of that loneliness.
This song is my favorite love song.
Bette Midler - The Rose.mp3 (http://www.p2pjihad.org/eclectica/Bette%20Midler%20-%20The%20Rose.mp3)
Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
and you its only seed.
It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.
