Lois in Williamsburg -- Day 1
September 21, 1994. To the left as we head north to Williamsburg is the Dismal Swamp, and off to the right the
ground is covered with morningglories. It is a lovely day and we are both feeling happy and inspired after our visit with Bill and Mary Crutchfield in Elizabeth City.
When we get to Williamsburg we take the bus
over to the reconstructed town, tour the governor's palace and the Wythe house, and
then go on down Duke of Gloucester street and into
various little stores. Get some large rolls at the bakery and a quarter pound of double-
gloucester cheese at an apothecary shop and sit in front
of one of the taverns to eat our makeshift lunch.

After we've eaten we go on down the street to another apothecary shop, a silversmith, the gaol, and into the old statehouse in time for a guided tour. When we get out of the statehouse we go into a linen shop and then into Tarpley's, where we look over threecornered hats and mobcaps and buy some soap to bring home as gifts.

At five-thirty the fife-and-drum corps marches from the palace green down Duke of Gloucester street to the old statehouse. It is young teenagers in seventeenth-century costume, their faces seeming as untutored and earnest and naive as those of farmboys of 300 years ago.

Lois puts her camera down and just watches the parade. It's been a long day. |
Now what should we do? Get something to eat? Think we should stay around another day? |
