From a letter Diana wrote me in 1997:

      ...So you're back in Berkeley —I was just reminiscing about when I did trail maintenance in Truckee in 1977 (20 years ago!) and hitchhiked into San Francisco one early Sunday morning in August to find that Elvis had (allegedly) departed from this earth. Now it's the 20th anniversary of his death. — Perhaps I need to visit northern California. —But alas, I am a poor struggling student in the process of completing a master's degree in environmental earth science and policy and have to spend the rest of this month absorbed in paper writing, research and numerous field trips exploring tidal flats and marshes.
      ...Spent the one year anniversary of my mom's death canoeing the Potomac River and the following Sunday —cast some more of her ashes into the Chesapeake Bay....I often dream that she's come back to life —and am always overjoyed at the prospect of talking with her again.
